JLPT N5, without pretending to be the test

N5 is the first level of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test. Public descriptions generally include hiragana, katakana, basic grammar, and a beginner vocabulary. NihonNest does not speak for the JLPT, is not endorsed by it, and does not issue official scores.

Estimated N5 readiness

Progress through the NihonNest path only. The official test is larger than this seed. The number is a study signal, not a pass prediction.

  • Hiragana gate cleared: 10 points. Twenty-five characters, learned row by row.
  • Katakana gate cleared: 10 points. Forty-six basic katakana, no dakuten or combinations.
  • Vocabulary marked steady: up to 50 points. Steady means two reviews and an interval of at least 3 days. Locked cards count as not steady.
  • Grammar marked steady: up to 20 points, same rule.
  • Best short mock: up to 10 points. The mock is six questions from unlocked cards, not a past paper.
